Do I need an online shop, or just a contact form?

2 min read Nikos Koulouridis

An online shop is a big step with real costs. Here's how to tell if you need one now, or if a simpler setup sells just as well.

"Should I sell online?" sounds like a yes-or-no question. In practice there are three or four steps between "just a website" and "full online shop", and many businesses do best somewhere in the middle.

The options, from simple to full

  • A contact form. People see what you offer and send you a message or call. You reply and arrange the rest.
  • An order or booking request. A form with the product or date already chosen. You confirm it and take payment however you like.
  • A few products with a payment link. A small number of items, each with a "pay" button. No full shop to maintain.
  • A full online shop. Product pages, cart, checkout, stock, shipping, invoices, returns.

A contact form is enough when…

  • Every job or order is a bit different (custom work, services, quotes).
  • You want to talk to customers before they buy.
  • You sell a handful of things, and most customers are local or regulars.

You probably need a shop when…

  • You have many products that people can buy without asking anything.
  • Customers ask "can I just order online?" again and again.
  • You want to sell outside your area, at any hour, without answering every message yourself.

What a shop really involves

The website part is only half of it. Someone has to keep products, prices and stock up to date, pack and ship, handle returns, and answer questions. There are also payment fees, legal pages, and invoices. If you're ready for that work, a shop can grow your business a lot. If not, it becomes a page with old prices and out-of-stock items, which is worse than no shop at all.

A sensible way to start

Start with the simplest option that works for your customers, and watch what they ask for. If orders keep coming through the form, that's your proof that a shop is worth it, and you'll already know which products to put in it first.

Not sure which step fits you? Tell me what you sell and how people buy it today, and I'll suggest the simplest setup that does the job.
